I need book recommendations for a 16 year old girl!?
Ok, so I am 16 and I absolutely love to read. Right now in my honors english class, we are reading The Once and Future King by T.H. White, and I want a good book to read that actually interests me(the book we are reading just bores me to death, so I need an "escape book" I guess you could say.) I have read all of the Twilight book, The Notebook, The Lovely Bones, the Pretty Little Liars series, The Time Travelers Wife, And Then There Were None, To Kill A Mockingbird, The Outsiders, and various other books. I am getting ready to Dear John, but I will probably get through that pretty fast, so I need books to read after that. I love mystery books, crime books, love/romance books. I like books that have to deal with girls my age, and crimes that happen to girls my age.
So, if you could recommend any books that I might like, please do. I will most likely read any book you recommend!

Ok please please please take my advice and read The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare. The first book is City of Bones. I read this because, like you, I needed an escape book after reading Crime and Punishment (bleh ! =[) for my ap english class. Its really fun it’s all about revenge, betrayal, magic, and family. I read the whole thing in like 2 days because is was that good. It’s crazy how everything just comes together in the end of the story.

WWII and the AUSTRALIANS?
why was the kokoda track an important turning point for australia?
why was the fall of singapore strategically important for australia?

- Australia joined with the United Kingdom in declaring war on September 3, 1939 on Germany. New Zealand did so also, preferring to send a separate letter to demonstrate independence. New Zealand and Australian units served in North Africa, Italy, and Greece and rendered good service. When the Japanese attacked around Asia and the Pacific in December 1941, the overseas units were rushed home as part of the agreement Australia and New Zealand signed with England at the start of the war. Some were sent to Singapore, where they were surrendered on February 17, 1942. Two days later, the Japanese bombed Darwin, sinking 26 ships.
England could no longer guarantee their support due to the war in Europe. In December 1941, the Australian government publicly asked for American assistance. That assistance would come with a price that Australia could not imagine in 1941.

In March 1942 MacArthur, fresh from his retreat in the Philippines, took stock of his new command, Supreme Commander Southwest Pacific. He found that he had few of his countrymen to command. Until 1944, the Australians would make up the bulk of his forces. The friction between MacArthur and his Australian subordinates would compromise the Allied operations in New Guinea.
Australia and New Zealand provided the Allies, especially Britain, with many needed supplies. New Zealand rationed its own food supply to increase the amount that could be sent to England.

In November 1942, while the Allies were landing in North Africa, MacArthur landed green American troops on Buna beach in New Guinea. They were immediately met with heavy fire, and discipline broke down. MacArthur’s reaction was to declare an American victory, and send in his experienced Australian troops. They were successful, but taking Buna had left a bitter taste in the Australian’s mouth. MacArthur was a bitter pill to swallow.

MacArthur recognized the importance of propaganda, and he often claimed American involvement in what should have been Australian laurels. Australians marched across the Kokoda Trail in New Guinea, took Kokumbona, and were landing along the New Guinea backbone.

By 1944 the New Guinea campaign was finally becoming an American operation. 500,000 American servicemen were in Australia, and both governments contemplated banning American-Australian marriages. Eventually 12,000 Australian women married Americans.

Australia’s Armed Forces tried to promote volunteerism. The Australian constitution prohibited compulsory service overseas. By war’s end, some 95% of her army and 100% of her navy were volunteers and could serve in New Guinea or Europe.

KOKODA:

1. This was the first time that Australians has definitively stopped the Japanese and broken their aura of invincibility.

2. So, it had military and morale significance.

3. It was the first invasion of Australian soil (PNG was technically part of Australia at the time).

4. Australians demonstrated that white soldiers were as much the masters of the jungle as the Japanese.

SINGAPORE

1. major blow to British prestige

2. encouraged the growth of nationalist movements which Japan could exploit

3. Japan gain the port capacity and facilities

4. Allies lost the port and its facilities, retreating across the Bay of Bengal and to the west and east coast of Australia.

5. the loss of Singapore gave Japan the ability (but not the desire) to mount an assault against Australia.

6. Australia had lost an entire division, the 8th, as POW, and still had 2 divisions in the Middle East. Australia was largely defenceless.

RENEGADE’S COMMENTARY:

(a) didn’t answer your questions, but also:

"Australia joined with the United Kingdom in declaring war on September 3, 1939 on Germany. New Zealand did so also, preferring to send a separate letter to demonstrate independence. New Zealand and Australian units served in North Africa, Italy, and Greece and rendered good service. …."

There is a barely contained sneer in this that NZ was somehow made a "more independent" declaration of war, My kindest comment is that this is semantics. "Good service"?? Both nations were crucial, e.g. Tobruk seige, Tel el eisa at Tobruk to name just two. To my knowledge, NZ dd not withdraw its troops from the Middle East after Pearl Harbour and its troops fought in Nth Africa dn Italy until the end of the war.

"… In December 1941, the Australian government publicly asked for American assistance. That assistance would come with a price that Australia could not imagine in 1941."

what does this imply? what is it meant to mean? It is not explained.

"…The friction between MacArthur and his Australian subordinates would compromise the Allied operations in New Guinea."

This has NOTHING to do with answering your question. Nonetheless, friction between allies is a given (Eisenhower was more a diplomat than a supreme commander). MacArthur was a strong personality with a media following, this made criticism both more difficult and also well reported when it occurred. But Mac was also critical of Australian performance which, while immensely commendable, was slower than it might have been and based on faulty intelligence of enemy strength. But no operations failed due to any friction.

"Australia and New Zealand provided the Allies, especially Britain, with many needed supplies. New Zealand rationed its own food supply to increase the amount that could be sent to England."

All nations rationed their food, NZ was not special.

"…In November 1942, while the Allies were landing in North Africa, MacArthur landed green American troops on Buna beach in New Guinea. They were immediately met with heavy fire, and discipline broke down…. MacArthur was a bitter pill to swallow."

This quote is very much the opinion of its author, don’t rely on it as history. The Red Arrow Division continued fighting and taking objectives.

"MacArthur recognized the importance of propaganda, and he often claimed American involvement in what should have been Australian laurels."

while probably true, Mac was also trying to gain sympathy from the US public, for whom the SW Pacific was even further away and less known than Europe. Without that public support, the SW Pacific would remain a backwater.

"By 1944 the New Guinea campaign was finally becoming an American operation. 500,000 American servicemen were in Australia, and both governments contemplated banning American-Australian marriages."

WHAAT? The operations were ALWAYS a combined operation between US and Aust services, and Australians were invading Borneo in 1945. Marriage has not bearing on your questions.

"Australia’s Armed Forces tried to promote volunteerism. The Australian constitution prohibited compulsory service overseas. By war’s end, some 95% of her army and 100% of her navy were volunteers and could serve in New Guinea or Europe."

WHAAAT? Australia’s overseas troops were volunteers from the START of the war. Australia’s constitution DOES NOT and DID NOT prevent service overseas. Certain Australian citizen militia were prohibited from serving overseas, but as New Guinea was effectively part of Australian territory at the time, militia were NOT prevented from serving here. Consequently, it was initially 2 militia battalions which confronted the Japanese on Kokoda.

Nonetheless, the paragraph does not add to your questions nor answer them.

Was He a hateful and murderous God and suddenly become LOVING in the NEW TESTAMENT?
Murder in the Bible

The act of murder is rampant in the Bible. In much of the Bible, especially the Old Testament, there are laws that command that people be killed for absurd reasons such as working on the Sabbath, being gay, cursing your parents, or not being a virgin on your wedding night. In addition to these crazy and immoral laws, there are plenty of examples of God’s irrationality by his direct killing of many people for reasons that defy any rational explanation such as killing children who make fun of bald people, and the killing of a man who tried to keep the ark of God from falling during transport. There are also countless examples of mass murders commanded by God, including the murder of women, infants, and children.

The following passages are a very small percentage of the total passages approving of murder in the Bible. They are divided here into three parts: 1) Capital Punishment Crimes, 2) God’s Murders for Stupid Reasons, 3) Murdering Children, and 4) Miscellaneous Murders. This list is long, but it barely scratches the surface of all the murders approved of in the Bible.

1) Capital Punishment Crimes:

Kill People Who Don’t Listen to Priests

Anyone arrogant enough to reject the verdict of the judge or of the priest who represents the LORD your God must be put to death. Such evil must be purged from Israel. (Deuteronomy 17:12 NLT)

Kill Witches

You should not let a sorceress live. (Exodus 22:17 NAB)

Kill Homosexuals
"If a man lies with a male as with a women, both of them shall be put to death for their abominable deed; they have forfeited their lives." (Leviticus 20:13 NAB)

Kill Fortunetellers

A man or a woman who acts as a medium or fortuneteller shall be put to death by stoning; they have no one but themselves to blame for their death. (Leviticus 20:27 NAB)

Death for Hitting Dad

Whoever strikes his father or mother shall be put to death. (Exodus 21:15 NAB)

Death for Cursing Parents

1) If one curses his father or mother, his lamp will go out at the coming of darkness. (Proverbs 20:20 NAB)

2) All who curse their father or mother must be put to death. They are guilty of a capital offense. (Leviticus 20:9 NLT)

Death for Adultery

If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife, both the man and the woman must be put to death. (Leviticus 20:10 NLT)

Death for Fornication

A priest’s daughter who loses her honor by committing fornication and thereby dishonors her father also, shall be burned to death. (Leviticus 21:9 NAB)

Death to Followers of Other Religions

Whoever sacrifices to any god, except the Lord alone, shall be doomed. (Exodus 22:19 NAB)

Kill Nonbelievers

They entered into a covenant to seek the Lord, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and soul; and everyone who would not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, was to be put to death, whether small or great, whether man or woman. (2 Chronicles 15:12-13 NAB)

Kill False Prophets

If a man still prophesies, his parents, father and mother, shall say to him, "You shall not live, because you have spoken a lie in the name of the Lord." When he prophesies, his parents, father and mother, shall thrust him through. (Zechariah 13:3 NAB)

Kill the Entire Town if One Person Worships Another God

Suppose you hear in one of the towns the LORD your God is giving you that some worthless rabble among you have led their fellow citizens astray by encouraging them to worship foreign gods. In such cases, you must examine the facts carefully. If you find it is true and can prove that such a detestable act has occurred among you, you must attack that town and completely destroy all its inhabitants, as well as all the livestock. Then you must pile all the plunder in the middle of the street and burn it. Put the entire town to the torch as a burnt offering to the LORD your God. That town must remain a ruin forever; it may never be rebuilt. Keep none of the plunder that has been set apart for destruction. Then the LORD will turn from his fierce anger and be merciful to you. He will have compassion on you and make you a great nation, just as he solemnly promised your ancestors. "The LORD your God will be merciful only if you obey him and keep all the commands I am giving you today, doing what is pleasing to him." (Deuteronomy 13:13-19 NLT)

Kill Women Who Are Not Virgins On Their Wedding Night

But if this charge is true (that she wasn’t a virgin on her wedding night), and evidence of the girls virginity is not found, they shall bring the girl to the entrance of her fathers house and there her townsman shall stone her to death, because she committed a crime against Israel by her unchasteness in her father’s house. Thus shall you purge the evil from your midst. (Deuteronomy 22:20-21 NAB)

Kill Followers of Other Religions.

1) If your own full brother, or your son or daughter, or your beloved wife, or you intimate friend, entices you secretly to serve other gods, whom you and your fathers have not known, gods of any other nations, near at hand or far away, from one end of the earth to the other: do not yield to him or listen to him, nor look with pity upon him, to spare or shield him, but kill him. Your hand shall be the first raised to slay him; the rest of the people shall join in with you. You shall stone him to death, because he sought to lead you astray from the Lord, your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery. And all Israel, hearing of this, shall fear and never do such evil as this in your midst. (Deuteronomy 13:7-12 NAB)

2) Suppose a man or woman among you, in one of your towns that the LORD your God is giving you, has done evil in the sight of the LORD your God and has violated the covenant by serving other gods or by worshiping the sun, the moon, or any of the forces of heaven, which I have strictly forbidden. When you hear about it, investigate the matter thoroughly. If it is true that this detestable thing has been done in Israel, then that man or woman must be taken to the gates of the town and stoned to death. (Deuteronomy 17:2-5 NLT)

Death for Blasphemy

One day a man who had an Israelite mother and an Egyptian father got into a fight with one of the Israelite men. During the fight, this son of an Israelite woman blasphemed the LORD’s name. So the man was brought to Moses for judgment. His mother’s name was Shelomith. She was the daughter of Dibri of the tribe of Dan. They put the man in custody until the LORD’s will in the matter should become clear. Then the LORD said to Moses, "Take the blasphemer outside the camp, and tell all those who heard him to lay their hands on his head. Then let the entire community stone him to death. Say to the people of Israel: Those who blaspheme God will suffer the consequences of their guilt and be punished. Anyone who blasphemes the LORD’s name must be stoned to death by the whole community of Israel. Any Israelite or foreigner among you who blasphemes the LORD’s name will surely die. (Leviticus 24:10-16 NLT)

Kill False Prophets

1) Suppose there are prophets among you, or those who have dreams about the future, and they promise you signs or miracles, and the predicted signs or miracles take place. If the prophets then say, ‘Come, let us worship the gods of foreign nations,’ do not listen to them. The LORD your God is testing you to see if you love him with all your heart and soul. Serve only the LORD your God and fear him alone. Obey his commands, listen to his voice, and cling to him. The false prophets or dreamers who try to lead you astray must be put to death, for they encourage rebellion against the LORD your God, who brought you out of slavery in the land of Egypt. Since they try to keep you from following the LORD your God, you must execute them to remove the evil from among you. (Deuteronomy 13:1-5 NLT)

2) But any prophet who claims to give a message from another god or who falsely claims to speak for me must die.’ You may wonder, ‘How will we know whether the prophecy is from the LORD or not?’ If the prophet predicts something in the LORD’s name and it does not happen, the LORD did not give the message. That prophet has spoken on his own and need not be feared. (Deuteronomy 18:20-22 NLT)

Infidels and Gays Should Die

So God let them go ahead and do whatever shameful things their hearts desired. As a result, they did vile and degrading things with each other’s bodies. Instead of believing what they knew was the truth about God, they deliberately chose to believe lies. So they worshiped the things God made but not the Creator himself, who is to be praised forever. Amen. That is why God abandoned them to their shameful desires. Even the women turned against the natural way to have sex and instead indulged in sex with each other. And the men, instead of having normal sexual relationships with women, burned with lust for each other. Men did shameful things with other men and, as a result, suffered within themselves the penalty they so richly deserved. When they refused to acknowledge God, he abandoned them to their evil minds and let them do things that should never be done. Their lives became full of every kind of wickedness, sin, greed, hate, envy, murder, fighting, deception, malicious behavior, and gossip. They are backstabbers, haters of God, insolent, proud, and boastful. They are forever inventing new ways of sinning and are disobedient to their parents. They refuse to understand, break their promises, and are heartless and unforgiving. They are fully aware of God’s death penalty for those who do these things, yet they go right ahead and do them anyway. And, worse yet, they encourage others to do them, too. (Romans 1:24-32 NLT)

Kill Anyone who Approaches the Tabernacle

For the LORD had said to Moses, ‘Exempt the tribe of Levi from the census; do not include them when you count the rest of the Israelites. You must put the Levites in charge of the Tabernacle of the Covenant, along with its furnishings and equipment. They must carry the Tabernacle and its equipment as you travel, and they must care for it and camp around it. Whenever the Tabernacle is moved, the Levites will take it down and set it up again. Anyone else who goes too near the Tabernacle will be executed.’ (Numbers 1:48-51 NLT)

Kill People for Working on the Sabbath

The LORD then gave these further instructions to Moses: ‘Tell the people of Israel to keep my Sabbath day, for the Sabbath is a sign of the covenant between me and you forever. It helps you to remember that I am the LORD, who makes you holy. Yes, keep the Sabbath day, for it is holy. Anyone who desecrates it must die; anyone who works on that day will be cut off from the community. Work six days only, but the seventh day must be a day of total rest. I repeat: Because the LORD considers it a holy day, anyone who works on the Sabbath must be put to death.’ (Exodus 31:12-15 NLT)

2) God’s Murders for Stupid Reasons:

Kill Brats

From there Elisha went up to Bethel. While he was on his way, some small boys came out of the city and jeered at him. "Go up baldhead," they shouted, "go up baldhead!" The prophet turned and saw them, and he cursed them in the name of the Lord. Then two shebears came out of the woods and tore forty two of the children to pieces. (2 Kings 2:23-24 NAB)

God Kills the Curious

And he smote of the men of Beth-shemesh, because they had looked into the ark of Jehovah, he smote of the people seventy men, `and’ fifty thousand men; and the people mourned, because Jehovah had smitten the people with a great slaughter. And the men of Beth-shemesh said, Who is able to stand before Jehovah, this holy God? and to whom shall he go up from us? (1Samuel 6:19-20 ASV)

Killed by a Lion

Meanwhile, the LORD instructed one of the group of prophets to say to another man, "Strike me!" But the man refused to strike the prophet. Then the prophet told him, "Because you have not obeyed the voice of the LORD, a lion will kill you as soon as you leave me." And sure enough, when he had gone, a lion attacked and killed him. (1 Kings 20:35-36 NLT)

Killing the Good Samaritan

The ark of God was placed on a new cart and taken away from the house of Abinadab on the hill. Uzzah and Ahio, sons of Abinadab guided the cart, with Ahio walking before it, while David and all the Israelites made merry before the Lord with all their strength, with singing and with citharas, harps, tambourines, sistrums, and cymbals.

When they came to the threshing floor of Nodan, Uzzah reached out his hand to the ark of God to steady it, for the oxen were making it tip. But the Lord was angry with Uzzah; God struck him on that spot, and he died there before God. (2 Samuel 6:3-7 NAB)

3) Murdering Children

Kill Sons of Sinners

Make ready to slaughter his sons for the guilt of their fathers; Lest they rise and posses the earth, and fill the breadth of the world with tyrants. (Isaiah 14:21 NAB)

God Will Kill Children

The glory of Israel will fly away like a bird, for your children will die at birth or perish in the womb or never even be conceived. Even if your children do survive to grow up, I will take them from you. It will be a terrible day when I turn away and leave you alone. I have watched Israel become as beautiful and pleasant as Tyre. But now Israel will bring out her children to be slaughtered." O LORD, what should I request for your people? I will ask for wombs that don’t give birth and breasts that give no milk. The LORD says, "All their wickedness began at Gilgal; there I began to hate them. I will drive them from my land because of their evil actions. I will love them no more because all their leaders are rebels. The people of Israel are stricken. Their roots are dried up; they will bear no more fruit. And if they give birth, I will slaughter their beloved children." (Hosea 9:11-16 NLT)

Kill Men, Women, and Children

"Then I heard the LORD say to the other men, "Follow him through the city and kill everyone whose forehead is not marked. Show no mercy; have no pity! Kill them all

What do you think of my idea for a story?
The genre is fantasy, but it’s not a kids book and it doesn’t involve some flimsy love triangle between a human, vampire and werewolf. It’s aimed more at teens as the feel I’m going for is dark fantasy.

Here’s the plot.
Lucy’s dad is abusive towards his wife (Lucy’s mother) until eventually she runs away, leaving behind Lucy and her baby brother Charlie. Lucy becomes the main care taker or the house and Charlie. Her father turn his abuse to her. She harbours immense hate for her mother, but at the same time idolises her for having the courage to get away from such a horrible place. When Lucy’s dad becomes violent towards the baby, Lucy has had enough, and packs up their stuff and suns away. She heads out in the woods behind her home with no idea where she’s going when a scraggly looking boy jumps out at them, scaring them. His name is Rowan and he’s run away too. He says he is the baby in a family of 11 children and nobody cares about him. Together they continue walking until they reach a log that blocks their path. They climb over it and although they are still in the woods, they look different. Somehow darker and all the trees look like they twist in even weirder ways.

*The plot gets a little mor vague from here on in, as I’ve only fully planned out the first part*

Basically, they’ve entered a magic realm, full of darkness and evil. The good characters of the land have been overtaken by an Evil Fairy Queen who came into the realm a few years ago. The evil fairy queen has small and withered wings that cannot fly, so she rides a broom, like a witch. She has turned all the good creatures (faires, goblins, wizards etc) into slaves. She has cut them off from all their wealth and had some locked up. When Lucy, Rowan and Charlie arrive, the creatures are convinced they’ve been sent to save their realm and get rid of the evil fairy queen. So they take on the quest. They meet a lot of obstacles and help along the way. In the end they defeat the evil queen by subduing her with music and giving her back her own heart, which she kept in a glass case. It turns out that the evil fairy queen is really Lucy’s mother. She didn’t abandon her children at all. One night she just had to get out of the house for a bit and wound up in the magic realm. Once you enter the realm, you become either good or bad, there’s nothing in between. What’s in your heart is brought to the surface. Lucy’s Mum’s heart was so black and full of hate (due to her abuse) at the time that as soon as she entered the realm, she turned evil. Lucy and Charlie stay in the realm to live with their mum, the GOOD fairy queen now. Rowan goes home to his family. After seeing the horrible way the creatures in the realm were treated, he decided his family wasn’t so bad.

That’s it basically. Sorry it’s so long. I’d love to hear what you thought of it. Also, names are just temporary at the moment - if you have any ideas, let me know. Thanks for all your answers.
@ AnteSavant: The entrance to the magic realm is not that far into the woods. Lucy and Charlie have not gone very far when Rowan joins them, and after that they don’t walk very long before they reach the log. Lucy’s mother went into the woods to hide from her husband who was really angry. He is standing at the back gate screaming at her. She was crying and ran. She planned to go back after he’d gone to bed.

Sounds interesting. I would give it a try if I saw it in the bookstore :) Anna | Jan 30, 2010

Oh my goodness! Write it, write it, write it! It sounds amazing! I love it and the plot is absolutely perfect. Keep writing! I’d love to see it at the bookstore one day! =)

the kids from the rough background that run away has been dead, buried, brought back to life, and buried again.same for the whole my family isn’t that bad thing.the fantasy stuff is just a way to mask that this story is so trite and unoriginal, and full of plot holes that make no sense; for example when leaving the house to blow off steam it makes 0 sense for the mother to decide oh hey lets randomly go deep into the forrest in the middle of the night no harm no foul can possibly come from that.
AnteSavant | Jan 30, 2010

It sounds interesting. Many elements resemble other stories, but it’s still got a bit of refreshing originality. The only thing I would suggest is that, instead of subduing the evil fairy queen with music, I would make it more dramatic. Also, Rowan should stay with them as well.

Can’t wait to buy it in a bookstore! Good luck!
Annalee | Jan 30, 2010

I think that you should publish it definitely. If I saw that on a shelf I would give it a go. Plot sounds very interesting. Wondering how old Lucy and Rowan are though?? Love it.

Why didn't heartbeat ever give a Yorkshire lad the role as the action-hero style 'Aidensfield bobby'?
Considering the series is actually set in North Yorkshire?

Rowan, Bradley and Walker were all from the South, Crane was from Manchester, and the latest one (Mason) is from Scotland of all places?

Although i agree, it is purely accademic now as the series ends! Will miss Blaketon and
Gina’s bum
Barne-Hurst | Jan 31, 2010

You are correct.
Also why don’t footballers come from the area they play for?
UK Dad | Jan 31, 2010

There’s been a terrible murder - come quickly Mr Postlethwaite.
Why should I come quickly lad?
Because we want you to solve the case?
What should I do that for?
You’re a police forensic’s officer.
Ooh! Listen to Mr Fancy Pants and his big clever words! We’re not in your namby-pamby lah-di-dah - ‘ooh, I have to solve a murder really quickly!’ - big cities like Chichester lad. Sling thy ‘ook and bring me a can of John Smiths!

That’s probably why!

How do you handle rude drivers who nearly run you and your child over?
Lately I have been having really bad luck with drivers as a pedestrian. There have been many times where drivers see me in the crosswalk with my 18-mon old daughter, either holding her in my arms, or pushing her in the stroller, and they cut me right off their moving car inches from our bodies. They clearly see me walking WITH A BABY in the CROSSWALK, yet they go anyway. I am so courteous to pedestrians usually—esp. ones with small children in tote bc I know they’re kind of distracted with them or cant move as fast—it is sad ppl aren’t the same for me and my daughter. One time after going to this park, in a 20 mph zone 0bc of the park for small kids location), this elderly woman about 65 or so comes speeding 50 and sees us crossing, and just kept going, missing us by inches. Then just the other day, this guy 0n a sun afternoon in a pickup truck, on a busy street where lots of pedestrians cross, cut us right off as we were in the crosswalk. He could’ve slammed his brakes, but he kept going. I called him an "asshole" as I was holding my daughter bc I was so mad. My SO was with me and said I had a right to, but was "lucky" I was with him, bc otherwise, it would be unsafe to do.
Then today in the parking lot this lady with her elder mother, started speeding up as she saw me crossing, this time NOT in the cross walk (but it
s a shopping center where crosswalks are scarce, or too far, it’s very poorly designed, so there’s lots of parking lot walkers) while I was holding my rather heavy daughter, I was about to stop like a deer in the headlights, but I kept going, bc Im tired of backing down. I knew it was putting my daughter at risk in some way, and myself, but I knew most likely she wouldn’t run us over, as she would be very very stupid to do so in broad daylight in front of business shops with lots of witnesses nearby. She barely stopped, and glared at me, and I turned around, she had her windows open, and I said, "You’re supposed to STOP when ppl are crossing the street". And I gave her the coldest look ever so she and her mother quickly looked away. I am proud of the way I handled it; I handled it with class, no cussing involvewd, setting a good example for my daughter that you CAN have class and still defend yourself.\
But my SO her father thinks I shouldn’t say stuff like that, even as classy as that, bc I could say it to the wrong person. I realize this, and have always been aware, but when do you draw the line? Am I supposed to be a doormat now just b/c I’m a mom? Esp. now that I’m a mom, I think I should stick up for my daughter and myself.

It doesn’t matter what poeple are supposed to do you need to be on the offence. Never ever take for granted that poeple will stop for crosswalks or anyting else. You need to be more cautious.

I live in a city, in an area where there’s a lot of crosswalks without signals and these totally laughable little signs that say "STOP FOR PEDESTRIANS IN CROSSWALK" that everyone ignores. I do a lot of yelling and pointing at the signs. However, I never put myself and my son into traffic. When my husband and I are walking together one of us will step out and yell "CROSSWALK!". But if it’s just me and my son I don’t walk out in the street. It’s not worth it. There’s sticking up for yourself and then there’s actually risking getting hit by a car.
dmg | Feb 03, 2010

I would do exactly what you did but not so classy! People are idiots and id be yelling and cussing at them, if i had a rock in my hand id throw the dam thing at their cars lol… seriously i would!
but if you decide to defend yourself in anyway like that be sure to have a cell phone to call the cops just in case they want to get stupid!
SinnerSG | Feb 03, 2010

i know what you mean, i went into town with my three year old cousin to get some groceries my aunt asked me to pick up one day last summer, bright day and he was wearing a bright blue shirt, so we were very easy to see, and i usually pick him up when crossing the street, but i was holding the groceries so i couldnt, but i had a tight grip on his hand so he wouldnt wander off, and we were half way across the crosswalk when this car with a middleaged man comes zooming around the corner, defiantly over the speed limit, and i seriously didnt think he was going to stop, so i quickly pulled my cousin behind me so he wouldnt take the hit, and the guy stops three inches from us, so i keep walking, but three year olds have little legs and cant move very fast, but we werent like hanging out in the street or anything, and the guy honks and rolls down his window and yells "could you two move any slower! do you not have legs or something" i sure wish i had said something at the time, but i was a little shook up, that he was going to hit my cousin and couldnt really think about anything else but getting him to the other side of the street, so i just kept walking, but i wish id told him off. i mean what kind of person would run down a 17 year old and a 3 year old crossing a crosswalk in a residential area? i get a little jumpy about it cause a few years ago a 7 year old girl from my town was crossing the street with her 70 year old grandmother and they were both hit and killed. people think that its like their road just because their driving on it, and dont have any concern about the people around them.

sex, lies and videotape: the 1989 blockbuster movie?
Did anyone seen this movie starring James Spader, Andie Mcdowell, Peter Gallagher(The O.C.) and Laura San Giacomo(Pretty Woman)? And what do you think about it?

Yes, "Sex, Lies and Videotape" is about sex, lies and videotape. And, while the sex is mostly served in dialogue-form and not a single shot of nudity is present, there is some graphic lying and some explicit videotape. Kinky, right?

Well, not really. "Sex, Lies and Videotape" is Steven Sodenbergh’s first film and it’s not a bad one. It’s just not entirely worthy of the praise it received, at Cannes for example. The situations in the film do create a fair amount of tension that moves the story along. But then, it’d be hard not to have some tension in a film about a woman whose husband is cheating on her with her sister, while she starts interacting with a stranger who is the husband’s old college roommate and has a strange videotape fetish and may or may not be a pathological liar. (How do you believe someone who just confessed to having been a pathological liar to not being one anymore? The film doesn’t really riddle that one for us.)

Clearly, these characters clash together. But it’s not as heated or interesting as it was in later Sodenbergh’s films like the spectacular "Traffic." The dialogues in "Sex, Lies and Videotape" range from good to incredibly awkward. But the real strength of the film is the actors. While James Spader clearly stands out - I have never seen him deliver such a subtle performance where every scene simply works for him - Andie McDowell is phenomenal, Peter Gallagher playing the scummy, treacherous husband yuppie lawyer type is great and Laura San Giacomo as the vulgar sister / lover is fabulous. Their performances make the script work, which, under normal circumstances with inferior actors would have seemed rather silly.

I didnt like the movie that much, it was just ok for me…. but James Spader was awesome
Amadeus | Aug 06, 2008

A good example of word of mouth gone bad. I sat through it waiting for something to happen…..then nothing. If the stories the people told were interesting maybe it’d be better. And to find out Spader’s reason for wanting to hear them……sorry not a good enough pay-off for the time spent waiting. It was hyped as some intellectual drama about the human psyche and an un-sex-filled sex movie about sex. You put sex in the title and try to pull of that movie? Sorry……hated it.

Battle of Long Tan

Battle of Long Tan
Battle of Long Tan (2006)

IMDB rating: 8.00

Plot: In the gathering dusk of 18 August 1966, 108 young, inexperienced Australian and NZ soldiers are separated and surrounded, fighting for their lives, holding off an overwhelming force of 2,500 battle-hardened Viet Cong and North Vietnamese soldiers. And, in the pouring rain, amid the mud and shattered trees of a rubber plantation called Long Tan, with their ammunition running out and another Vietnamese battalion massing for the final assault, the digger’s situation seemed hopeless. Long Tan is the true story of ordinary boys who became extraordinary men.

Actors: Worthington Sam,Documentary

Same question, different day lol. Would a story like this one appeal to you? Fantasy Fic.?
Deciding in July of this year to write a story, I planned on doing a spin off to Twilight by SM in the POV of a new character. But the character in question didn’t like that, didn’t like Twilight lol. I tried hard to get her to conform to my vision of her being a Cullen, but she was having none of it and fought hammer and tongs for her own plot. She got it! And so here it is.
Also, I am not a writer and this is my first attempt to write a story.

The story:
Clarisse’ 2000th birthday is approaching. She has known all her ‘existence’ that she was different. What she didn’t know was that she is much more different than she could ever have imagined.
The first 1200 years of her life were spent with her brothers (not in the biological sense) Rohan and Tristan who have raised her since she was a baby. They know her history; what she REALLY is, what she should become and how she even became to be, but have chosen to keep this from her. Along come Nicoli and Verity. Nicoli and Verity are a father/daughter duo. They live as a family of five for almost 800 years until one day Verity, after harbouring such an immense amount of hate for Clarisse, leaves, taking her father with her (because that is his daughter, his blood) and breaking a family apart. Thus, their departure sets off a chain of events that sets Clarisse’ wheels of fate in motion. A peace covenant made between Magics Elders and Darkworld Royals will be been broken. Blood will be spilled, and Clarisse will be found. Now her brothers must fight to keep the Royals from her while trying to calm the animosity between them and the Elders. The Royals send out assassins, the Elders seek retribution, and a family of 3 must battle for the salvation of an entire race. The odds are stacked against them and allies are few. What will they do? Will they reveal to Clarisse who she was born to be? Or will they die in a bid to keep her free?

Prologue:

Faster than anyone can comprehend I darted across the room, my eyes squarely fixed on my sister… my life… my everything; though she would never know that. Her new eye colour; a sparkling charcoal flame hue, sat well against her lightly tanned skin, the anger seeping from them growing more dangerous as each second passed. She was losing control. We were losing her.

Outside flashes of bright blue and white danced across the rolling sea of black sky, followed by the rumbling sound of surging thunder. The thunder made the house vibrate violently, while the wind; which less than five minutes ago was nothing more than a gentle breeze now howled ferociously, singing an eerie song of malevolence and bringing with it the first few drops of rain.

"Liss" I whispered, taking her face in my hands and lifting it up to mine.
"Fight this! For me, for Tristan, for you, fight this!" I pleaded.
"Pease!"
"Move … Rohan" her tone was low, the sound escaping through gritted teeth.
"No"

Resting my forehead on hers I forced every ounce of love, warmth and comfort that I could muster from within me and into her. The emotions passed between us, but had only the slightest effect on hers. This moment was the one moment we had tried desperately to keep her from experiencing. Yes she was the Ancient, but no it did not have to be this way.

Her eyes, in all their charcoal flamed glory, swirled with fury as she ripped her face from my hands. Bringing her hands up to her chest the speed she used in her movements were too fast for me to see. My body flew through the air, sailing backwards, where with a thunderous crash I smashed into the marbled fireplace.

The lightning outside flashed brighter, angrier, and the thunder that rumbled now roared dangerously; just as the the wind wailed fiercely and the rain now fell with an unmatched power all of its own.

My heart, had I had one that beat, would surely have been pounding furiously in my chest; dancing erratically with the frenzied shutters that banged loudly against the windows.

The monster, her monster, which had been so eager to escape, was now being liberated. Brutal violence emanated around us, ripping through the layer of anger that had lingered far too long. Her body rose from the floor, her face looked to the skies, a pained scream escaped her lips.

A burning desperation ripped through my body; desperate to save her, and foolish enough to die trying. With no caution for my own well-being, for my own safety, I sprung to my feet.

The prologue is actually something I just wrote lastnight. It would appear in the 3rd instalment of a book that was only meant to be 1 novel lol.

I don’t care what you think, just tell me why you think that. Everything you guy’s say helps me.

sorry but i am surprised, you said that you are not a writer? you are a natural, i really liked it, quite interesting, i would love to read more :)
